Fix repeated Outlook password prompts

Updated October 3, 2026

If Outlook keeps asking for your password, the saved sign-in token on your computer has usually expired or become corrupted. Clearing it forces a fresh sign-in.

Before you start

  • Confirm you can sign in at outlook.office.com with the same password. If you can’t, your password may have expired. Contact us to reset it.
  • Save any open emails you’re writing.

Steps (Windows)

  1. Close Outlook completely, including from the system tray.
  2. Open the Start menu, type Credential Manager and open it.
  3. Select Windows Credentials.
  4. Under Generic Credentials, remove every entry that starts with MicrosoftOffice (for example MicrosoftOffice16_Data:...). Click the entry, then Remove.
  5. Restart your computer.
  6. Open Outlook and sign in once when prompted. Check Remember me if offered.

Steps (Mac)

  1. Quit Outlook.
  2. Open Keychain Access (search with Spotlight).
  3. Search for Microsoft and delete entries named Microsoft Office Identities Cache and Microsoft Office Identities Settings.
  4. Reopen Outlook and sign in.

Still asking?

If the prompts continue after this, open a ticket. It may be a multi-factor authentication or account policy issue that we need to check from the admin side.
